History of the Motorcycle
We don’t know exactly where the idea started, but the motorcycle was born from the classic bicycle (obviously, right?). Steam powered inventions in the 1860s from France and America gave the first boost to regular old bicycles. Then came the power of the internal combustion engine with England, Germany, and more countries joining the race. Literally. Motorcycle racing actually started in 1895. By the start of the 1900s, the motorcycle as we know it had arrived.
Peugeot. Triumph. Indian. Harley. Names we’re still throwing around over one hundred years later.
Then came World Wars 1 & 2. Motorcycles were a big help to the war effort and production went through the roof. Even after tensions settled, motorcycles were in demand.
By the 1960s, the motorcycle was a part of culture at-large with a wider appeal than just practical transportation. Evel Knievel started jumping over shit in 1965. People wanted performance, reliability, leisure, and style and that’s exactly how Japan got in the game.
Even though Japan started late, their impressive manufacturing capabilities, reliability, and design blew away the competition. They reintroduced the dual-sport (dirt bike) style and added some serious choices with their sleek streetbikes. Even today, Japan has a solid grip on the industry.
And history continues to be written. Get on that future motorcycle manufacturers.
